Swastikas and racist graffiti deface Bondi Beach

Nick Hansen, The Daily Telegraph

Swastika symbols and other racist graffiti have been scrawled along a main street at Bondi Beach.
Police were called to Campbell Pde yesterday following reports of malicious damage, to find about 15 Jewish hate symbols drawn in black permanent marker on the footpath, a bus shelter, poles, benches and electrical boxes.

Another piece of graffiti read “Not white? Not right”.
Eastern Suburbs Police Superintendent Jason Box said they were treating the incident seriously.

“The NSW Police Force takes crimes that are motivated by hatred or prejudice very seriously and any such crimes will not be tolerated,” Supt Box said.“If you are a witness or victim, and you experience any incidents such as this, we encourage you to report to police as soon as possible.”

The graffiti has since been removed.

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies chief executive Vic Alhadeff condemned the graffiti as a “hate crime”.
“It is hurtful (to Jewish people) given the swastika represents Nazi Germany, at the same time it’s offensive to all Australians because Australia fought against Nazi Germany,” Mr Alhadeff said.

“This is an affront to all the citizens of Bondi, and there is no place for such bigotry in our country.”

He said the graffiti was discovered on the same day as the foundation meeting of Keep NSW Safe, a coalition of 35 ethnic leaders calling on the state government to strengthen race hate laws.

The group particularly wants stronger legislation targeting the incitement of race hate crimes.
“People like Man Monis, the Curtis Cheng (killer), don’t just wake up one day and do those things, they were incited to do them,” he said.
